Becoming Goodly Parents

"Parents must resolve that teaching in the home is a most sacred and important responsibility."

I love that quote by Elder Perry.  It's so true.  I'm so thankful for parents who taught me how to choose the right, how to be kind to others, and how to become closer to Christ.  Thanks mom and dad :)

The word "parent" now has a whole new meaning to me seeing how in about 4.5 months Dustin and I WILL be parents... at times it's a little scary to think about but... I'm sure every new mom and dad has felt this way.  And we've been taught by goodly parents ourselves so...we have a good guide to go off :)

Coincidentally  "becoming" is a word that was mentioned multiple times today in church.  Becoming is a journey.  It is a process, something you continuously work toward.   Such as BECOMING a better friend, a better neighbor, a better follower of Jesus Christ, and yes...a goodly parent.

As the first counselor in the Primary where I teach kids ages 3 -11 every other week, it is not hard to recognize the kids that have been taught at home.  Those kids know the scripture storiesThey understand what it means to be reverent and obedient.  They participate in group discussions and help with small tasks.

On the other hand, it is quite easy to identify the kids who have not been taught.  Often these are the kids who seek after attention and/or have a hard time understanding things.   I love these kids though -- all of them.  And the leaders in Primary do what we can to teach them how to obey, share, and listen.  But ultimately, that is the parents' responsibility.

And that's exactly what Elder L. Tom Perry said in this talk : Becoming Goodly Parents (quoted above as well):

Lessons taught in the home by goodly parents are becoming increasingly important in today’s world, where the influence of the adversary is so widespread. As we know, he is attempting to erode and destroy the very foundation of our society—the family. In clever and carefully camouflaged ways, he is attacking commitment to family life throughout the world and undermining the culture and covenants of faithful Latter-day Saints. Parents must resolve that teaching in the home is a most sacred and important responsibility. While other institutions such as church and school can assist parents to “train up a child in the way he [or she] should go” (Proverbs 22:6), this responsibility ultimately rests on the parents.

Elder Perry  suggested 5 ways that parents can build a stronger family:
  1. Parents can pray in earnest, asking our Eternal Father to help them love, understand, and guide the children He has sent to them.
  2. They can hold family prayer, scripture study, and family home evenings and eat together as often as possible, making dinner a time of communication and the teaching of values.
  3. Parents can fully avail themselves of the Church’s support network, communicating with their children’s Primary teachers, youth leaders, and class and quorum presidencies. By communicating with those who are called and set apart to work with their children, parents can provide essential understanding of a child’s special and specific needs.
  4. Parents can share their testimonies often with their children, commit them to keep the commandments of God, and promise the blessings that our Heavenly Father promises His faithful children.
  5. We can organize our families based on clear, simple family rules and expectations, wholesome family traditions and rituals, and “family economics,” where children have household responsibilities and can earn allowances so that they can learn to budget, save, and pay tithing on the money they earn.
Yesterday when I asked Dustin what he was most afraid of about having a baby he said "that we're bringing them into a world filled with all sorts of evil."  We talked about how we both turned out pretty good I'd say ;)  and that as long as we're doing our best, we definitely won't be left without help from our Heavenly Father.

Elder L. Tom Perry in that same talk said:

Our strengthened family cultures will be a protection for our children from “the fiery darts of the adversary” (1 Nephi 15:24) embedded in their peer culture, the entertainment and celebrity cultures, the credit and entitlement cultures, and the Internet and media cultures to which they are constantly exposed.  ....Families provide an anchor and the safe harbor of a home where each child of a loving Heavenly Father can be influenced for good and acquire eternal values.

Shortly after Dustin and I were married, one of our friends said he did not understand how men's roles were so unequal.  In his mind, the men seemed to have more power or dominance in the home and as a member of the church.  Our friend was not a member of the church.  We explained to him that a man and wife are equal partners who each contribute to the same cause whether that be family or serving in the church.  There is no question in my mind that my role as a future mother supports Dustin's role as a future father.  The Proclamation to the Family says:

“… By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners.”

It could not get any plainer than that :)  I love Elder L. Tom Perry's closing remarks:

God bless you goodly mothers and fathers in Zion. He has entrusted to your care His eternal children. As parents we partner, even join, with God in bringing to pass His work and glory among His children. It is our sacred duty to do our very best.

Looking forward to doing our very best :)

Cooking Craze!

So...flat out sayin it, cooking is not my forte.  That's not to say that I don't love eating -- quite the opposite actually!!  I enjoy food MORE when someone else makes it for me....even if it's a sandwhich. ha.

Every so often...maybe once a week, I go into a cooking craze and I want to make everything.  Thank you Pinterest for some inspiration there

One week I came across a recipe to make garlic chicken on rice:

So ya know what? We made it!  BAM!

In one ziplock bag, garlic, olive oil, and uh...some other stuff that I forgot. haha.  I didn't save the recipe cuz unfortunately it was a little bland for our taste.  In the bag on the right we put regular chicken seasoning :)

 Cooked it up:

Got our rice cooker goin....

And voila! Ok, so I forgot to take an "after" pic but this was basically it...without all the pretties cuz we are practical! ;)

I also saw this recipe for pretzels on Pinterest.  So we made them BAM!

And truthfully they turned out EXACTLY how this looks.  Click HERE for the recipe.

We followed the recipe and then took some over to our neighbors. And then ate the rest... :)

Dustin had to teach me how to do the pretzel knot cuz I just could NOT figure it out. hahaha.  But, GOT IT!

Maybe I am not as bad a cook as I thought ;)

Week 12

I hit Week 12 on Nov. 25th:
So this morning my stomach was HURTING!!  I was seriously going to throw up.  Then I realized the waist line of my pants were not helping. They were putting pressure on my stomach…so I undid the top button………AND had to zip my pants down…............all the way, as I'm sitting at my desk at work. haha.   Phew! I can breathe now!  Luckily my shirt is really long but man, this is awkward, especially when I walk around.  Looks like these pants are already retired and we’re only 3 months into this pregnancy!  Why did no one ever warn me this would happen so soon? Like um....Mother?? hahaha. jk. :)

Week 9

On November 4th, I was 9 weeks along!
My little bump in this picture is totally water weight.  I was kinda freaked at first thinking I might be having twins cuz or something because I thought you didn't start showing til later.... haha.
Thoughts from Nov 6th, 2012:
As I look back over the last few weeks I realize that I’m WEIRD but not AS weird as I’ve heard other people are during their pregnancies so….really (Dustin) I’m somewhat normal. ;)
Feeling Sick? Just a “stomach ache” kind of feeling and lots of headaches.  The good thing is that up to this point I have not thrown up so…I’m not sure if I should be worried or just count myself lucky.  Our first doctor's appointment is 2 weeks away so we’ll see.
Things that bug me:
·         Being hot/cold.
·         Scrounging around in my pathetic food drawer at work because I forgot to pack “snacks.”
·         Trying to get ready for my huge craft boutique event in 4 weeks but at the same time only wanting to sleep
·         Holy fatness. Hahaha.  I keep reading that I’m not supposed to be “showing” until like 20 weeks….and I’m ALMOST halfway to 20 weeks but I feel like a balloon!  Every time I feel sick, I eat.  And so far it’s worked out pretty good with soothing my stomach…ahum…except it’s damaging my “figure” WAY too early on. Haha.  I can’t even ANNOUNCE that I’m pregnant yet (I don’t want to until I’m 12 weeks) and already I look like I am like 4 months along. Haha.  oh boy….
Things I crave: Arby’s roast beef sandwiches, bean burros, blue powerade, spaghetti
Emotional? Not really.  Then again, ask Dustin ;)
Funny things:
·         Just stating the facts here:  I’m really gassy. Dustin hates it.  hahahha. So do I.  It’s really gross but the book says that’s “normal.”  I think it makes Dustin re-think this pregnancy thing ;) hahaha jk.
·         Water does not taste good to me all the time.
·         I DO NOT want sweets. I had my ice cream kick…now it’s gone.
·         The smell of barbecue or smoke makes me feel sick.
·         I don’t want chicken/pork.  Not shredded/cubed or anything.  Seeing pictures of it on menus makes me feel sick.

Week 5

High 5 for Week 5!
Monday - 10/22/2012
So, exactly one week and one day after finding out I’m pregnant……BAM!: hellllooooo morning sickness! …..which…actually occurred in the middle of the night but of course I already know that the “morning” part is totally false. Ha.  Last night the little man (or little woman) in my stomach must have not wanted to sleep…at least he or she didn’t want ME to sleep. Haha.  I had a stomach-ache and woke up several times.  Of course I know this little boy/girl is not even the size of a fingernail right now AND according to my handy-dandy pregnancy book, says that he/she has a little tail and looks more like a reptile than a human baby at this point. ….that’s JUST comforting  ;)   I got a little “something” swimming around in my stomach making me want to vomit.  Haha.

So this morning when I got to work, man I felt awful   and then….the heavens opened … ;) ... and I remembered the advice of that handy-dandy pregnancy book that peanut butter crackers help with morning sicknes.  And boy did they!  I felt there should be an ode to peanut butter crackers right then and there ;).  No more throw-uppy (totally a word now :)) feeling.  So I’m feeling pretty good now…PRETTY good…. Not totally normal but then again…I don’t think I’ll feel “normal” for the next 8 months so… learning to live with it :)

I’ve started matching up my “symptoms” to the pregnancy book – during weeks 2 and 3 you’ll start to be obsessed with food and may experience cravings – Can I just say check?!  In one week I’d craved cheeseburger hotdogs (that we’ve only found at Circle K), Arby’s, Burger King, Olive Garden, ice cream, ice cream, and more ice cream (yeah I know, bad for the baby. Probably gonna give him/her a brain freeze, poor thing.  But don’t worry – I’m out of that phase…this week :)).  I’ve just wanted really random things that I don’t normally want like a Burger King whopper.  I honestly cannot even remember the last time I ate a whopper or even WANTED one – probably like 5 years ago…

Tuesday - 10/23/2012
Today I ate cereal at 7am….and by 9:30am I was literally STARVING. …I thought they say that pregnant women’s metabolism SLOWS DOWN?!  Hello?!?!  (This book must be totally off.  Great...I'm getting advice from a book that was written like....80 years ago ;)  ....I feel like I’m feeding THREE people here!  ahhh, better not jinx myself there.  I think twins would be um…SLIGHTLY overwhelming…. But hey, we’ll see  ;).  So I started thinking about carrot sticks…again….I swear I am going to buy some of those today if it’s the last thing I do. I’ve been wanting those so bad.  And grapes and cherry tomatoes.  So but after analyzing how far away the nearest grocery store is from work, I realized I can’t possibly make it there, in and out, and back in 30 minutes.

So…plan B was the café.  They of course don’t have carrot sticks but they have pizza…. With ranch.  :)

  .... Smile.

When the café FINALLY opened 2 hours later at 11:30, at 11:32 I was in line for pizza..
When I got back to my desk…I realized  I forgot to tell them to add onions.  And the only ranch option had been “fat free buttermilk ranch” which I decided couldn’t be THAT bad……

oh, but it was.  It was THAT bad.
And I didn’t even want chicken on my pizza…why did I ask for that? Totally picking that off...

…….  Man, lunch….Total fail.  Haha.   I called Dustin and was almost emotional about my food.  SO sad my food ALL DAY YESTERDAY and today has not even tasted good. …He was sad for me but reassured me that I could go buy carrots today.  Yay….carrots!!  (back to square one again, haha)

I’d better not get my hopes up about the CUT of carrots that I’m really super craving though huh?

……wha?

… ok, so ya know those perfect carrot sticks they serve when you get buffalo wings? (with the ranch and celery sticks on the side too?)   …yeah, those.  I want THOSE.

NOT the stumpy little ones…

NOT the big long ones with the skin and gross ends…

I want those perfect little peeled carrot sticks…. I may or may not have been thinking about calling to ask if I can order a package or two from the buffalo wings place…if that’s even allowed… or asking who their carrot supplier is. .. holy random conversation that would be….   But for reals, I REALLY want those carrots. ….

 …for reals.

I'm Pregnant?! My First Thoughts

As I said in my last post, I've been slacking on keeping up with the blog.
Hence, this week we'll be doing a little back-tracking to catch things up to speed with being PREGNANT! :)

Background:
I kept a Word document going at work updating my thoughts, feelings and experiences of my pregnancy. Finally I got smart and decided I needed to be putting these things on my BLOG. After all, the "us" part of "You, Me, & Us" is about to have a little addition ;)

Am I Pregnant?
10/09/2012
I have to be pregnant.  We're ready to have a baby after all and…for the last few days my stomach has started feeling a little funny when I make movements like rolling over in bed or bending down… I feel like I just jumped on a trampoline after drinking a bunch of water or something. Haha. And also....I'm late… .Today is day 6 of being late.  I took a pregnancy test and it was negative. But I know something is up....

Yes, I’m Pregnant!
10/13/2012
I waited a few more days since the last test… my period never came.  Today is late day #10.  Last night, Friday, Dustin and I bought the most expensive pee stick EVER for $10 at Walgreens….at 9:30 at night… When we bought the prego test….I already knew I was pregnant.  I HAD to be. But I HAD to have it confirmed.

This morning I wanted to test before Dustin left for work.  Just so we would KNOW for SURE ya know?  So at 5:20am, I tested. ……………and................ I screamed! …..haha.  The funniest part of the story is that Dustin yelled from our room: “Did you pee on your hand?” ……… hahahha.  (No Dustin, duh! haha)

I started like…. laughing/crying/kinda freaking out…and said “No. Babe…..come look at this.”  He comes in, I show him the big fat plus sign from the test and say “I’m pregnant!”  He gets a big smile on his face, kisses me and then says “Babe! We’re gonna have a baby!”  and started dancing around. haha.… I didn’t know what I was thinking….. for the past few months I started gathering pregnancy material and thinking how awesome it’s gonna be to have kids. ….and I think now that it’s finally HERE I can’t believe it.  I has not sunk in yet.

I immediately called my mom – yes, at 5:30 in the morning, and she was soooo excited! Haha.  Mom handed the phone to dad whose first words were “I’m too young to be a grandpa.”  Totally joking of course cuz that’s just dad :)  I told him “Well, it’s too late now”  ;) haha.  He said congrats and deep down I think he’s pretty excited ;)  It will be fun to watch him be a grandpa :)  And my mom is gonna spoil this kid rotten!

Little baby, your dad Dustin is so wonderful I’ll have you know.  He’s SOOO excited :)  He kissed my tummy before he went to work this morning. And he called from work today to see how “me and the fetus” are doing. Haha.  He’s so good with kids – his nieces and nephews and 2 year old girl in our ward, Riley McKnight who LOVES him.  Whenever we babysit, Riley just hangs onto Dustin like he is her dad.  Riley always comes and sits with us in church.  Hope she doesn’t get all jealous when she realizes she won’t be number one anymore in about 8 months… ;)

I called the maternity doctor’s office – they’re closed on Saturdays. I’m interested to see how far along I am.  I don't really know how the calculations work, not gonna lie.

So before I was pregnant people tried to reserve a spot in line to be told when I was officially pregnant. But funny that when things actually played out.... it just kinda... spilled how it spilled.  Dustin of course was 1st, my mom, and dad were 2nd and 3rd…. and then the most random thing…. A guy from our ward called…. At 7am.  Funny guy….Jeremy Gee.  I was supposed to use Dustin’s truck to help him and his VERY pregnant wife move out of their house.  When he called though he said that his painter had just cancelled and asked if I could help paint………… immediately my thoughts were  “paint fumes.... bad for the baby…maybe…right?… Before I said anything, I told him to put his wife Ashley on the phone.  She apologized for her husband’s ridiculous phone call and said I didn't have to help paint if I didn't want to.  And then it just kind of slipped out, "I wouldn't mind helping honestly but....I'm pregnant...and I don't know if that's a bad thing right now or....."   She got super excited and asked me when I found out.  "um....this morning actually."  hahahha.

It was good to be able to talk to her later though about being pregnant.  She is due in 2 weeks so it was neat to get answers to my pregnancy questions since she had been there.

Before I helped them move, I called Carol, my mother-in-law.  I told her and.............she didn't say anything.  So I talked a little bit more...........and she didn't say anything. .......So I fumbled for a few more sentences......... nothin.  Finally I was like, "so....are you excited or...?"   And she said, "THAT's how you're going to tell me?  You're so crafty and creative and all I'm getting is a phone call?  I was expecting something super cute and creative."  ........hahahha.  whoops ;)  I told her it was coming............and that I had a few creative ideas on how to announce the gender so.... THAT will be a surprise ;)

DAY ONE:
As you can see, the water-weight had already begun. haha.

Overall, it's been pretty crazy...just knowing that growing inside of me is a little life.

Dustin and I are very excited for him/her to come join our little family :)
He/She is going to love it :)

The Mushy Gushy Post ;)

So between work, school, sleep, cleaning my house that never seems to stay clean, my church calling, spending time with Dustin, and everything else... getting on this blog consistently has ever so subtlety slipped through the cracks.

And I thought being Super Woman was easier than this....
what the heck?  ;)

Luckily for me, I've got an AWESOME husband who is a major helper -- this boy can mop and sweep faster and better than I can...wish I was joking there. haha.  He does dishes, laundry, makes our bed, cleans our kitchen, vacuums, changes the oil in our vehicles, fixes mine and everyone else's computer problems, inspires me to develop my talents and follow my big dreams, AND helps me with my crafts--sanding, painting, and vinyl lettering.  He definitely has some major skills.

And sorry ladies, he's not for sale. Or rent ;)

Awhile back, one of our close friends once jokingly commented that Dustin and I are too in love.  ....hmmm....Is that even possible? ;)  haha.   I mean, if a person were to go on and on and on about the person they're completely in love with... I can see how that could fall into a mushy gushy category that some people tend to want to stray away from and thus deem "too in love" ;)... ..BUT I guess that's the good thing about this blog (and the heads up with the title of this post) is that it's all mine so I can say whatever I want right? haha.  And unlike conversations you may get stuck in the middle of where you have no other option other than to listen, people can read....or not to read this -- that is the question ;)

On a serious note, I got to thinking about what our friend said ...not really pondering on the thought that I just may be TOO in love with Dustin, but pondering more on how much I show/tell/express to Dustin how much I love him... Do I say it enough?  Do I show it enough and all the time?

So...with fair warning, I begin my Mushy Gushy Post:  ;)

I remember 10 years ago when I was 14, I wrote out a list of qualities I wanted in my future husband.
Doesn't every girl do this? ;)

...I still have that paper in my journal. I don't remember all the things I wrote, but off the top of my head I remember some of them.
  1. I wanted a person who was helpful and who helped around the house every once in awhile when I was tired.
  2. I wanted a person who was kind and who wouldn't put me down, and who joked around with me.
  3. And I wanted someone who was my best friend -- that would sum things up.
Yep, that should take care of it right?....I thought that as long as he hit the BIG points, I'd be happy. I didn't need anything else...not that I didn't WANT it but I couldn't expect him to be perfect or anything, because I surely wasn't. ....

But then I "met" Dustin, (and I say "met" because he lived right next door to me LITERALLY for a some 15 years before I even really took interest in him), at my little brother's Eagle Project.  A bunch of family and friends went out to the desert, camped, and then woke up early the next morning to clean up weeds, rocks and all sorts of stuff... I distinctly remember being very impressed with Dustin's work ethic. He didn't complain and was a super hard worker who when others whined, he jumped in and got the job done.  That's when I was like, "heyyyy, so.........we should go out."  haha.

From there, I won't say that our dating life was perfect or easy.  I am 2 years older than Dustin so I decided to move out and get a job while his plan was to go on a mission.  I studied abroad in Mexico for 5 weeks, then came home and moved to Mesa where we long-distance dated (2.5 hrs away) for a few months before he went on a mission to the Philippines. When he came home unexpectedly due to medical reasons, I was dating someone else.. ...yeah, totally not the happiest time of my life there figuring out how that was supposed to work out.  The other guy quickly showed his true colors, of which I was very much not impressed.  I said farewell to him, and felt the awkward and sad tension between Dustin and I....me feeling very much like I didn't deserve him and therefore not sure how to "run back" or if that was even the right answer..  After much prayer, and counsel from my dad, the answer was simple: Did I love him?  Yes.  Did it feel right to be with him? Yes.  Then there was my answer.  And once I decided on my answer, things fell into place.

And I am VERY happy to say that things did.  I truly could NOT be happier being married to Dustin.:)

That ten year old list was JUST a snippet of what kind of man I wanted my future "Mr. Perfect" to be.  Dustin not only checked off my list of "hopeful qualities" but has completely outdone it, becoming the husband I never knew I wanted and needed.

Dustin is:
  1. Someone who will clean the whole house to surprise me when I come home, who will pack my lunches in the morning while I am still getting ready.  Someone who always asks me how my day is, how I'm feeling, and what he can do to make things better. Someone who asks me what I would like to do/where I would like to go without giving a thought to where HE wants to go.
  2. Someone who I can completely be myself around, and be fun and random and crazy with, because he is JUST as crazy as I am.  He laughs at my jokes even if they are super lame, and makes me laugh and smile, all the time.  He NEVER puts me down, and is constantly throwing out ideas on how he can help me fulfill my dreams of getting my craft and musical talents going into something bigger.
  3. Someone who is my best friend. For life and for forever.  I can rely on him, trust him, cry to him, laugh with him, and enjoy spending all my time with him.  Sometimes I just want to run away and spend a few weeks...or months.... just us somewhere fun.  Retirement is going to be AWESOME! hahaha.

After being married for 2 1/2 years, I still get that giddy school-girl feeling DAILY when I get to see him after work.  People tell me that's called "the honeymoon phase" and that it will wear off.

I say loving someone is a choice.

It's a choice whether you let things get old and repetitive, or whether you stop going out and having fun, or whether you let things overwhelm you to the point of snapping. It's a choice to be happy despite negative circumstances that may rise up around you. It's a choice to fall into that every day rut of "nothing's great and nothing's new or exciting."  So ya know what?  MAKE IT exciting.  MAKE IT something new and fun.

I'm not the most creative person in the world...I TRY to be creative, yes.  But ya know....it's a lot of work.  I honestly love people who willingly share their creative ideas because that not only saves me time, but saves me the stress of figuring out every little detail.  I came across this website called "The Dating Divas" where people have submitted their date ideas -- If you're looking for something last minute, fun, simple, cheap, elaborate, expensive, fancy, creative, funny, or ANYTHING, this is totally a good website to check out :)

Dustin and I have pulled 6 ideas off this website so far.  In fact, for Christmas Eve, I did THIS idea. I bought all the items I needed at the dollar store, and it was a huge hit! Dustin loved it :)

So in my mind, I got more than I hoped for.  He's definitely better than I deserve and I'm very blessed to have him.  He's not perfect. But he's perfect for ME :)

So, if this post has been way too mushy gushy and you only made it through about a fourth of it, that's cool. I'm not offended. Unless your name is Dustin...then you have no excuses ;)

I love you Dustin!  Here's to the next 70 years of marriage + eternity...which is kind of a long time.... but I'm perfectly ok with that ;)

That Made My Day

So I get back to my desk at work and my co-worker, Dalton, is laughing so hard he is crying.  I of course want in on what is going on, and he tells me about a student’s application he just reviewed.  (To preface, when students are not currently employed they can list information of a person they know who is employed.)  So this student wrote about her employed friend:

Name: Sally Smith
Place of employment: Taco Bell
Job Title: Crew Member
Description: Fast food restaurant. She hates it.

???????   ....hahhahahahahhaha.  On a student application, you're REALLY going to write that?  .... ..hahahhaa,  That pretty much just TOTALLY made my day. ;)
